[CenturyTel] Help With CO Location - Charlottesville, VA

My daughter just moved to Charlottesville, VA. The phone exchange is 434 979. I gather that the area code 434 is pretty new because dslreports could not find it when I tried to use it in the CO search facility.

The physical location, from Google Maps, is just to the east of Piedmont Virginia Community College on Maple View Drive.

I would like some sense of the location of the CO for this neighborhood and if it is reasonable to expect dsl service to work in it.

I'd appreciate any help local folks can provide. I am in northern California.

thanks,

baumgrenze

also you can IM ctl_joey her phone number and he can tell you what services are available.

Area code 434 has been around for 7 or 8 years. As to your daughters location, I believe she would be fed from a Marconi remote located just south of her at the Stone Creek Villages apartments.

Also F.Y.I, with portability of local numbers the 434-979-xxxx that you gave could be most anywhere within Albemarle County (700+ sq miles)

Thanks, dslanywhere,

I gather the upshot of your reply is that service should be available. I tried googling "Marconi remote" without success. The "Marconi" suggests a wireless or radio frequency connection with the CO. Perhaps the problems she is experiencing are a result of deterioration of inside wiring in a 1985 townhouse. She’s paid Century for wiring service and anticipates help from a tech soon.

Your second paragraph suggests that her area code/exchange combination will never work as a search tool in dsl reports. I tried the ZIP code and only came up with cable and satellite.

Thanks again,

It's a fiber fed remote coming out of Charlottesville Main that has DSL.

And just using the area code and prefix, at least here, will get you nothing because of number portability. Whoever at CenturyLink you talk to will need your daughters address. That will give the serving terminal number and the MEDR which tells them the highest speed she is eligible for

Thanks again.

The connection sounds, in part, like what AT&T is flogging in our area as U-Verse (Internet, Phone, TV) although AT&T's associated phone service is no longer a real land-line. AT&T uses fiber to a local box called a VRAD, and then the old copper from there to the premises.

I sent an IM to ctl_joey. I guess I will hear back when the work week starts.
