story category Obama Using NSA, AT&T For New Snooping Project
Aimed at sniffing traffic between government, private sector contractors...
(old news - 03:30PM Friday Jul 03 2009)

Tipped by StarFish267 See Profile
The Washington Post reports that the Obama administration is "proceeding with a Bush-era plan" that would use the NSA to more closely inspect the traffic traveling between government networks and the private-sector. According to the report, the aim of the classified "Einstein 3" project is to better protect the government from external cyber-threats, particularly those originating at private-sector contracted firms. AT&T was chosen by the Bush Administration to help participate in the project, and the trial has seen delays as AT&T "is seeking legal assurance that it will not be sued for participating in the pilot program." Meanwhile, the Salt Lake Tribune reports on a new $2 billion NSA data center in Utah.

Hmm change mister Obama was the slogan of your campaign so far I've seen little. I'm still happy I didn't vote for you sir Ron Paul 2012.

We'll see how many more slipperly slopes Obama takes the US down. Heck maybe soon we'll be at war with North Korea.

Proud of it as much as you were if/when you voted for Bush or McCain. So if McCain had won, would it be us typing the same thing but reverse the "Thanks McCain Voters" instead?

When you build the alternate quantum universe machine so we can view alternate realities to see what would be happening if someone had won for President let us know. Otherwise you are just pissing face first into the wind as far as the rest of us are concerned.

No. I would condemn it as loudly as I DID when Bush was president.
I will continue to lay the beginnings
of the destruction of our liberty
at his feet as well - this NSA program being the whole of it.

But O'Bama continues to violate his apparent ideology by supporting the eventual end of an individuals sovereignty.

I'm part of a huge group of Bush voters who condemn him over this. But to OBots, the future of their grandchildren is a fair price for having their Golden God anchored in place.

If you read at the top of the page they are basically going to "spy" on anyone doing business with the government.
They have every right to do that just as any company can record the communications their employees make.

Now if you show me an article where he is going to spy on Americans for no reason like Bush did then I will be worried.

No kidding. Want to take any bets on the lack of outrage there will be over this?

Trust the dear leader, he knows whats best for all of us.
Perhaps, though this summary is a little different because it's talking about the data between the government networks and everyone else basically.

That actually makes sense because most of the "hacking" that takes place in business is from within, same as with this country. To worry about a bunch of hackers from China or Russia is one thing, but if you don't pay attention within, countries are often destroyed from within.

So yeah, it's Big Brother sitting between the government networks and us. I'm actually fine with that. The only problem I have is when big brother is sitting between Us and Us again. That's where I draw the line.

So it's a double-edge sword. I want the government to be diligent in not setting up some awesome monitoring data center for it's network and the rest of the world but ignoring our own networks within. But at the same time, I don't want some dip*hit to able to abuse access by stepping into the private sector networks just to get back at his girlfriend or to help his buddies at XYZ corporation spy on a competing company.

If Obama does it, it is all for the good of the citizens. When Bush did it it was evil. The majority of the press is in Obama's pocket. They are nothing but paid shills for the Democratic party.

With that said I see nothing wrong with the NSA monitoring traffic to .Gov web sites in order to prevent cyber-attacks by enemies of the US. But at least I am consistent in my beliefs. I supported this under Bush and I support it now. But it is hard not to see the hypocrisy of the left in this matter.

How is that? This is a move to monitor Government agencies, NOT the public the way the previous boss dictator did.

The government has no inherent right to privacy in most circumstances. This is a move towards Gov transparency, and monitoring possible corruption with "contractors".

Now, O'Bama went to the bother to actually attend the vote for NSA Data mining (aka Telecom immunity) and give it his endorsement. Likewise he's made no effort to hamper the NSA's efforts to collect our data in any way.

So the efforts to gain complete data collections on US citizens continues on as planned.

But what you're saying is
that this data created by US citizens,
that will be storehoused forever,
isn't part of an effort to gather data on US citizens.

Why? Because it's being put to another purpose at the moment.

That sure does sound a whole lot like BOb voter speak to me.

Each time a private citizen visited a "dot-gov" Web site or sent an e-mail to a civilian government employee, that action would be screened for potential harm to the network.
This is a good thing and should have happened long ago. Should the government not be allowed to protect its infrastructure from threats?

Good to see that you comprehend what you read. This has NOTHING to do with spying on citizens. They are spying on their own network at it's borders.

Did you miss the part about this being between private government contractors and government networks? With the rash of private contractors who have caused security breaches lately, this is a good thing. The federal government needs to protect their network.

The problem with this country...

Is well represented here by a couple posts. Everyone always manages to find excuses for crap like this as long as it's their guy in charge.

The same people who would be seething a couple years ago, dish out excuses now that their guy is the one running the orchestra.

Unless people start standing up for what they believe in no matter who is in charge, we deserve every single BS that comes out of Capital Hill and the White house.

It's been that way on this issue for years. That's how the political partisans on each side contribute to the government gathering more and more information on people --- by being silent or defending it when it's "their" side doing it. And frankly most of them don't give a shit about the surveillance, they care first and foremost about advancing "their" side.

Seriously. It's little more than pseudo-patriotism pong. It's certainly not helped by the cable networks. I think keeping people bickering certainly helps grease the rails for policy that's not in most human beings' best interest.

So so true - you hit the nail on the head on this one.

Just imagine if McCain was president and he did this. People would have been yelling from the rafters - "More of the same!!!"

People's partisan views and lack of ability to see through party lines prevent any real change from happening. "It's only wrong when the other party does it" mentality that citizens express everyday and yet don't notice it needs to stop.

But alas, it most likely never will.

I bet none of you even read the article.

This is being used to monitor traffic coming on and off the GOVERNMENT network. Besides, the capability exists to monitor your activities as it is now and is most likely being used already. It'd be foolish to believe that traffic isn't being monitored now.

Everything is controlled by special interests, but you guys argue like if one political party disappeared the world would magically get better. Geez.

Cyber-secsurity Czar

This is the same group that whines that the government doesn't have a cyber-security czar, then that he is too low ranking and doesn't have the ear of the President, then that he resigned after only a short period on the job.

Now you complain that DHS is actually testing a plan to put a security ring fence around some critical government agencies and you are shocked. Makes one chuckle.

What the article at the top of the page says is the government is going to spy on the government.
They are going to record all communications the goverment makes.

Bush spied on all Americans with no reason to do so. Bush violated the constitution.

Govt and Spying every day business as usual

To those of you who "think" our government isn't spying and compiling information on its citizens you are living in a dream world. THe IRS, for one, purchased more computing power than you could imagine and it isn't to process tax returns. So much more than was needed has been acquired.
I'm not particularly worried "yet" because I've been good and haven't tried to cause a lot of waves but top those who have skirted the edge between legal and illegal be assured that you can be monitored and no one will tell you. Even the so-called freedom of Information Act is worhless paper. The Feds will give you what they deem appropriate and not what you beleive you are entitled to. Thats life in the 21st century!

The majority of hacking and data theft is perpetrated by?

The employees and contractors who have access to corporate and government networks are the greatest security threat to those networks. Seems to me that this type of measure makes sense.

A majority of the large companies out there employ this type of monitoring on their networks too. No one seemed too concerned about that.

The reality is that this is vastly different from the data mining that ATT was doing for the government on the public internet.

The thing is that if you do data mining only on persons who connect to government websites, for example, that's every citizen who has a computer, you betcha. Citizens who don't have computers don't have to worry about their internet activity, since they don't have any.

Re: The majority of hacking and data theft is perpetrated by?

If you are connecting to government computers from your home, I would hope the government is watching what you are doing while you are connected to them. Just like every time you connect to a corporate website, they (or more aptly, we) are watching what you are doing.

Legally, when ever you connect to another person or company's computer, you have agreed to them monitoring your usage because, after all, it is their property and they have the right to monitor and protect it. Once you packets hit one of my systems, I am in my rights to inspect every packet.

In the case of government systems, the government can do the same thing.

Frankly, I'm just amazed at the conspiracy nuts who are posting on this story about how this is such an evil thing or posting how the government will soon have people walking around asking for your papers. Get real people.

We are ALL screwed!!!

IF Government really has to spy on Government, then you know our leadership is compromised already. IMO I am CERTAIN this is a merely a front and will ultimately be used against the people.

Remember, the PEOPLE are the GOVERNMENT.
You think it is going to stop with your job description, think again.

Come on people, wake up.

It is no longer enough to place fear on the public so now they are placing fears within their own bureaucratic infrastructure by building this center.

Personally I am quite sick of it all.
I honestly only feel worse seeing news like this.

And for the record the media is definitely in the pockets of the current administration. There ARE HUGE groups of people on alternative media networks like YOUTUBE that strongly appose the Climate Bill that is about ready too move toward a Senate vote. And where is THIS in the NEWS? And if it is in the NEWS how balanced are the arguments?

That Bill HR2454 is Huge, and day after day I check over 10 major news center sites and nothing, zero zip, no insight, no nothing. Maybe a few short clips that is it.

Just M. Jackson all damn day long and what OTHER countries governments are doing. There is a reason why the silence is so real. People are getting paid off, because some real heavy shiat is trying to be pushed forward.

This building announcement just proves it again, and this snooping WILL NOT STOP WITH THE GOVERNMENT, MARK MY WORDS.

Never have I seen such a group of people so in denial and naive! F*CK!

For what it's worth, Happy 4th

Just M. Jackson all damn day long and what OTHER countries governments are doing.
It's the Fox News approach to infotainment. The other networks are using the Natalie Halloway template to formulate what information America needs to know.

The closest thing to a balanced news is NPR. They don't just rerun AP feeds and they allow all the interests in a news story to make their case.

ABC news seemed to be trying to de-bias themselves. But then we get this infomercial on O'Bama's health care plan and I don't know anymore.

But for the most part; media is our enemy. The sooner we realize that, the better chance we'll have a responsible press one day.

The closest thing to a balanced news is NPR. They don't just rerun AP feeds and they allow all the interests in a news story to make their case.

Now THAT is funny. NPR...balanced news.

What a joke...

Do you even LISTEN to NPR?

For years they were as nearly as far left as Pacifica. I stopped listening to them over a decade ago. Something had to have happened; I don't know what. I remember there was a threat to pull their funding around 2005 because of their leftist slant to the news.

About a year and a ½ ago, I tuned in because it was all the radio would get in and I almost dropped dead from shock. NPR was reporting on the primary runups and not overtly favoring the Democrats at every turn. I had to pull over and check my universe; I thought I had wandered through some sort of portal.

As if that weren't enough, NPR actually gathers news. They NYT and the BBC are excellent at finding meaningful stories. But by the time they're done filtering the story through their bias machine it's almost unrecognizable from the truth.

But they do bring the story to the table and I can't really say that about Fox. Fox will resupply the non-left side of an issue, after most of the media carefully edits it out. That's why they are universally hated by the left. However, Fox rarely digs up anything meaningful on their own.

At least with a BBC/NYT story, I can look up the details that were omitted during the crafting of the story; and get the complete issue. With NPR, I don't have to put in the effort. If a leftist has editorialized an issue with their comments, NPR will find someone from the right to offer a countering view. They weight both sides equally. I can't come up with a single broadcast or cable network who'll do that, reliably.

Lastly, NPR is interesting. I heard a 1 hour story on a web outfit that reverse-419's Nigerian scammers. They have the 419 guys running all over West Africa after wired money that isn't there. NPR had a reporter at the Web Site HQ and another in Nigeria following one clown from city to city until he was broke and stranded in some town not friendly to vagrants. What a great story.

I don't know if you listen to Rush without question (he has been brilliant but his beliefs are stale) or you're a leftist who can't bear that NPR went off the farm. Whichever it is, you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

OMG!

I can't believe all the conspiracy theory and fear that goes on in this thread. It's ridiculous. No wonder this country is in the shits, the people are really not that bright.

Nah, it all sounds like the same paranoid mess that many (including myself) were screaming when Bush was in office. I'm just glad I woke up.

Monitoring the traffic between contractors and Government

....is NOT the same thing as spying on private individuals.

In fact, anything going on involving Government could stand some scrutiny anyway. I don't see why the same people who thought spying on civilains was OK "to catch terrorists" are now upset at this move.

If anything this seems more legitimate to me... Obviously AT&T doesn't want to get tagged for any abuses that occur--- such as they being privy to their competitors negotiations with the Government for contracts. I'd worry about that......

Everyone screaming about this...

... are just showing their political agenda and trying to score political points.

This is actually a good thing. Spying on private citizens isn't.
